When I looked under the microscope, I was taken aback by the brilliance of colors. Were my classmates having the same experience as me? Was their breath taken away as well?

No two thin sections are exactly alike. This is exciting. Each thin section presents itself with a willingness to be explored and understood. I found my favorite snapshots at my leisure.

Thin sections are infinite sources of beauty. Something of visual interest can be found at any angle, orientation, and placement on the slide. Any single snapshot of the slide has its own combination of colors and patterns, all a part of the greater story of the rock.

With a slice of rock (only 30 microns thick) and a microscope, I had infinite opportunities to find beauty. The beauty is utterly natural.
Looking forward
Look for methods of producing prints sustainably - i.e. source lumber for framing locally, source zero carbon paper, etc.
Use showing as an opportunity to provide a learning experience akin to a museum exhibit
Supporting local business
Prints and framing are done by J. Chastain Photo (Franklin, TN)
Scopeshots will be shown at MasayaCo, L&L Market (Nashville, TN)
Quality and longevity
Prints are completed using highest quality materials - Moab Entrada Rag Bright paper, custom oak framing, conservation clear glass
This showing has been a long time coming. I took my first of these photos while in university working towards my Earth and Environmental Science degree. Petrography, study and classification of rocks in thin sections, was a part of the curriculum. Once a week, I took to the microscope to study. While I enjoyed the course material, I was particularly captivated by the beauty I saw under the microscope. The summer after graduating, my instructor graciously permitted me to continue using the microscope on my own time. I used this time to take as many beautiful photos as I could.
This showcase is the (heavily delayed) culmination of my efforts of that summer. Through my art I hope to showcase the natural beauty of the earth — at a scale rarely seen.
